Learn moreCan hail damage be hard to see?
Yes. Much hail damage is subtle and may not be obvious from the ground.
Bruising and granule loss in particular are usually identified on the roof surface, not from the driveway. We do not recommend climbing onto a roof to check — that is what an inspection is for.
Hail size and severity
There is no single hail size that always damages a roof. Whether damage occurs depends on a combination of conditions:
Roof and exterior
Roof vs Exterior Hail Damage
Damage to gutters, window wraps, vents, and other soft metals can indicate that hail struck the property with force. Those clues do not prove roof damage on their own, but they help direct where to look.
Exterior restoration servicesDoes hail damage mean repair or replacement?
It depends on whether the damage is isolated or widespread.
Damage confined to one slope or a small area is often repairable. Damage spread across most of the roof surface, on an aging roof, or where matching material is unavailable is more likely to point toward replacement.
